Take your dog out to observe other dogs

Dog parks or beaches are often not recommended by dog trainers in general due to the large number of dogs and people in a small contained space, let alone for dogs that have poor social skills, are fearful or aggressive. However, if it is your only option to let your dog run off-lead and really exert themselves physically (which can be more important for some breeds than others), then introduce this environment to them in a slow and controlled manner. You have to of course make sure their recall is bullet proof too! (See more information on recall.)

Start by simply going to the park but don’t go inside, instead allow your dog to watch and observe the other dogs and how they are interacting from a safe distance and where they are not going to react.

When another dog comes near the fence, give your dog a treat (or play with the toy or ball depending on their preferences) to help create a positive association with other dogs.

Apply similar techniques as outlined in walking a nervous or aggressive dog, such as going at times when it is quieter, starting far away and slowly moving closer. This is where getting professional help is important as you want to do this in a way that your dog is not pushed too far, too fast and starts to react.
